By Steph from ALLTrips.com
The Mountain
Steamboat is actually made up of six different peaks, creating a complete mountain range with a diversity of terrain. The resort offers 165 trails with 14% catering to beginners, 42% to Intermediate skiers and 44% to advanced. Steamboat also offers a superpose and terrain park for those interested in free riding. At 450 feet long and 56 feet tall, Mavericks Superpipe is amazing and at least worth a ski past it even if you have no interest in going through it.
Season
The season begins in late November and runs through early April, with lifts opening at 8:30am and closing at 3:30pm. The annual snowfall is over 300 inches and the base elevation is just under 7,000 feet. Steamboat is known for "Champagne Snow", which was coined back in the 1950's by a local rancher. Champagne snow means light, dry powder, perfect conditions for skiing and snowboarding and only found in northwest Colorado.
Ski and Snowboard School and Rentals
New to skiing or snowboarding or looking for a refresher class? Steamboat offers lessons for all abilities and ages, including adaptive skiing for those with a physical impairment. Instructors are nationally trained and offer innovative techniques to get you up on the snow as quickly as possible. Specialty clinics are available for those looking for something out of the ordinary and childcare for those between 6 months and 4 years old is conveniently located on mountain. If you don't have your own gear or dragging your old skis through security sounds like a nightmare, Steamboat has plenty of rental options offering basic packages through state of the art equipment. Prices range depending on type of equipment and length of rental.
Steamboat Lift Tickets
There are many options for lift tickets depending on how long you'll be in town and your interest in spending time on the mountain. For those who make Steamboat a home or second home, season passes are available. For those of us just able to visit now and again, Steamboat offers daily tickets through six day tickets, with discounts available for the more days you purchase. Special prices apply to children, teens and seniors. Steamboat does offer free tickets to kids under 12 when they ski with their parents, which is a great deal. Check the ticket offices for more information on pricing and hours of operation.
Getting to the Mountain
Getting to the mountain is incredibly easy and free! Steamboat Springs offers a free bus service between downtown, many lodging locations and the mountain. The bus runs frequently, day and night, and can be used by anyone. Beyond the bus, many lodging companies offer free shuttle service for their guests and renting a car is always a possibility if you are looking for a bit more freedom.
